Best wishes on another new season in the Latrobe Derry Old Timer's Senior League. I wish to give you all some information before we start our 7th season of old time baseball. Our games start at 9:45 AM each Saturday, (NOT 10:00, as it may have been reported). I apologize for the confusion. Please be at the field by 9:15 so you can warm up properly and help get the field ready. Games last 7 innings, and after 9 innings, can end in a tie. We are a "gentleman's league" which means sportsmanship trumps winning. We try to get through the season with no injuries, arguments, or controversies. If your competitive juices still flow fast, the Over 40 league is the league for you. In our senior league, we encourage the older men to continue to play baseball as long as they can. Our hope is a competitive game where each team ends the season with 5 wins and 5 losses.
If you are new to the league, ask your manager/coach or team mates to go over the rules of our league. You will hear these 2 sentences all year; "Outside plate, outside plate" and "No more advances". If you don't know what this means, you are definitely a "rookie" to us. Our most senior men are given every opportunity to play in our league...as we never know when our playing days are finally over. None of you thought you would be playing baseball at the age of 55.
Senior players hitting the ball through the outfield, are awarded a single and cannot be thrown out at first. Younger pitchers should avoid throwing fastballs to these senior players. The 4 outfielders are not permitted to play within 25 feet of the infield. Pitching is restricted according to age. Batting order remains the same all year, with the oldest player on a team batting first in the opening game. We are limited to only 1 adult umpire, who often covers the entire playing field and all bases. If we have a 2nd umpire, it is a youth umpire trying to learn how to umpire for his future. Please be kind to them. They also have to learn our league rules, and get used to 2 first bases and 2 home plates.
Our league motto is "Start out each game slowly....and taper off after that".. Any error is better than any injury.
With this said; have fun, enjoy the league and make some new friends. Looking forward to another successful season.

Latrobe/Derry Old Timers League to announce Youth Equipment Program
What is YEP? Know any boys or girls that would like to participate in a sports program but they and their family don’t have the funds necessary to purchase the equipment, shoes or uniform? If that is the case, help may be on the way, according to John Wolicki, spokesman for the Latrobe/Derry Old-Timers League’s newly formed Youth Equipment Program (YEP).
“The Latrobe-Derry Old Timers League wants to make sure every young athlete in the Latrobe-Derry area has the necessary means and equipment to participate in a sanctioned athletic program regardless of their economic situation,” stated Wolicki, who, along with Gib Stemmler, are coordinators of the program.
“The idea to make sure our kids in need had the equipment necessary to participate in youth sponsored athletics is not new to the area,” Wolicki noted, addng that the Old-Timers League previously had an equipment bank with such things as used baseball gloves and additional baseball equipment.
That was a great idea and young athletes who needed a glove or maybe some other form of baseball equipment to participate benefited from the bank.
The difference with YEP is that it reaches beyond the sport of baseball to any boy or girl who wishes to participate in the many Latrobe-Derry area sponsored athletic programs and can show an economic need to have the proper equipment to play the sport of their choice.
“Our plan is to start out small with contributions from the league,” said Wolicki. “Once we have some money in the jar, we plan to reach out to our area coaches who know their kids better than anyone else to see where the need exists. Coaches may then submit an application to the league where a group of trustees will review the applications and award money accordingly.”
“This is a wonderful testimony to the generosity of over 300 members of the Old-Timers League whose ages range from 40 to 86 years young,” stated Stemmler. “They understand and appreciate the positive influence sport has on our youngsters.”
“We are in the very early stages of the YEP program and until we receive feedback from our local coaches, the scope of need will not be identified,” Wolicki explained.
“Perhaps the need may not be that widespread, but if there is one kid who is unable to participate in a sport in our area because of an economic disadvantage, that's one too many.,’ he added, noting that the YEP motto is, “One kid unable to participate in a sport related activity due to economic disadvantage is one too many.”
With that in mind the league developed this mission statement: To provide disadvantaged youth currently participating or wishing to participate in sanctioned athletic programs within the Latrobe/Derry area with proper equipment or financial support.
Besides Wolicki and Stemmler, also helping coordinate the program are treasurer Al Young, legal advisor Michael Stewart and trustees Ron George, Earl Penrose, Scott McIlnay, Tom Buerkle, John Catanzerite, Jerry Sopko, Terry Giannini, Tom McKee and Tim Donaldson.
Our plan is to start out small with contributions from our league. Once we have some money in the fund, we plan to reach out to area coaches who know their players better than anyone else to see where need exists. A YEP application from those coaches may be submitted to the league where a group of trustees will review them and award money accordingly.
Anyone who would like to contributions to the fund can send donations to YEP, Latrobe-Derry Old-Timers, PO Box 21, Derry Pa. 15627.

Gib Stemmler acknowledged all league sponsors and their managers. He asked John,W., Skip Clawson, Earl P., and Al Young to be recognized with their spouses. Jerry Sopko and John Catanzarite could not make it this year. Ray Robb was cheered as our oldest player, at age 84. H-G lost a nail-biting, 8 inning game, to visiting L.L., at Shrum field, on Sat. AM. L. Legion scored 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning before H-G pitcher; Dave McCracken, settled down and held LL scoreless for 7 more innings. He allowed 1 man to reach base in the 3rd, and 2 in the 6th, but no more runs until Legion scored 2 in the bottom of the 8th. McCracken pitched all 8 innings for his 3rd consecutive complete game. At age 74 , he is one of the oldest pitchers in the Sr. League.
The 2 Legion pitchers were just as effective as, Jim Price, who started out walking 2 batters in the 1st inning, also settled down and recorded three consecutive strikeouts to keep H-G off the scoreboard. H-G broke through and tied the game at 2-2 in the 3rd inning. Dave Donaldson pitched the final innings, keeping H-G bats quiet until the 8th inning.
In the top of the 8th, Legion took the lead when Joe Lininger led off with a single, and after a strike-out, Price came through, with a clutch triple, giving L.L. their first lead since the 3rd inning. Following the 2nd out, Skip Polvinale stroked a single to left field giving Legion an important insurance run and a 4-2 lead. H-G wouldn't give up. They fought back, after 2 outs, to get a 3rd run and put the tying run on base. Donaldson ended the game when he struck out Watson, sending H-G to their 3rd consecutive 1 run loss. A hard fought game by both teams! H-G's record is 1-3 while L.L. is 3-1. Submitted by: Earl Penrose

Pitchers "Battle" as Latrobe Legion beats Hartman-Graziano 4-3 in an extra inning game.
He faced the minimum number of batters in the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 7th innings by recording 3 up and 3 down.

Weekend Round-Up August 2&3
MERLIN FUNERAL HOME RALLIES FOR 10-9 WIN
Merlin Funeral Home rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a narrow 10-9 win over Latrobe Legion in a game played August 16, 2014 at Legion-Teener Field. The game was shortened from seven innings in order to satisfy the current rule that states no new inning may be started after 12:00 noon. The contest was a closely played affair with scoring in every inning. The Legion took a 2 to 0 lead in the first inning, but Merlin responded by scoring a cumulative total of five runs in the first and second innings. After five innings, Merlin still held an 8 to 6 lead. During the top of the sixth, the Legion tallied three runs and actually took a 9-8 lead before Merlin’s game winning rally.
While playing with a reduced roster due to injuries and typical absences (such as for vacations) is the norm at this time of the season, it should be mentioned that the Legion played this contest with a significantly diminished roster. Two players were absent due to a death in their extended family. In their loss, the Legion was paced by Tim Donaldson and Skip Polvinale. Donaldson went two for three, scored one run and recorded four RBI’s. Polvinale similarly went 3 for 4, scored a run and tallied three RBI’s.
In addition, Art Dira and Dave Donaldson each collected two hits. Joe Mauro led Merlin with three hits in three at-bats, a run scored and four RBI’s. The last of his hits was a two-run double in the sixth and proved to be the game winner. Bill Ankney, Dan Cribbs, Tom Shomo and Randy Wilburn each chipped in with two hits for the winning team. Cribbs, Shomo and Steve Stanko each also scored two runs.
The game at Shrum, Latrobe Legion bested McCabe’s Funeral home by a 12 to 5 score. Jeff Hickman was the leading hitter with 3 singles. Both teams combined for 9 singles & only 1 double. LL jumped out to a 7-3 lead after 4 innings, and never looked back. McCabe's stranded 10 runners this game, and had scoring opportunities. A few timely errors led to some LL unearned runs. Bob Pitney, of McCabe's, received a great sendoff, from both teams. He stole 2 consecutive bases to end his playing days, before his move to Greenville, Pa. "Best wishes", to Bob and let’s hope he finds a league in NW Pa, to play in. "You will always be welcome in our league."
In the first game played at the Teener League field this year, Wellington won over Senuta pro-chiro by at 12-7 score. Our newest managers, John Wolicki and Skip Clawson, did a fantastic job in their debut. The field was in excellent condition, and many players showed up early to help. It was
appreciated. Only 3 no- shows for both teams. The score was 9-7 in the 6th inning, and pSc had the tying run on 2nd base when closer and first tie
pitcher, Tom Kelly was able to get out of the jam. The game featured several great defensive plays by both teams making crucial running catches in the outfield for WRG. The game featured 24 new players to our Sr. League after our largest expansion since the league began. A few players reported that they haven't played baseball in over 40 years. Only 1 player pulled a muscle, in the first inning, and let's hopes he recovers quickly.
Prior to the game, we reviewed our Sr. league rules. Some of the newer players really enjoyed seeing Gary Zuchelli, catch while sitting on his stool.
Despite 19 runs, the pace was fast, and the game ended before noon. 3 of the 6 pitchers; Lou Pianneti, Tim Fedele, and Bill Palmer, threw for the 1st time in our Sr. league. Winning pitcher was Beanie Shoup. Latrobe Legion, Wellington Resource group, and Merlin Funeral home are all 1-0 in the 2nd half of the season, while McCabe’s, Senuta Pro-chiro, and Hartman Graziano are 0-1.

that do not get my email or do not have internet.
We plan to hold our annual team selection/draft on June 3rd at 5:30 PM in the Legion. We will only have 10 days to get our uniforms ordered and

Please contact me if you were on last year’s committee and would like to be involved again this year. 16 players signed up to date, 4 being new players to our league.
There is still some interest in a pre-season game at Kiski Prep, and also taking 20-24 players down to Washington Co. for a demonstration game with the hopes of recruitment of older players in that area. It will be on a voluntary basis, if our players are interested. We could play a pre-season
exhibition game on June 7th, and play in Washington County later in the year. The guys from Wash. Co will need to coordinate. John did a 4-team
schedule for our 2 fields, (Shrum/Derry and Johns/New Derry) while trying to equalize home/away. We will try to get a port-O Jon at each field this year per your suggestions. Get yourself in shape; June will be here before you know it....
